Lutz Surgical Partners charged us over $84,000 for TWO of its surgeons (why two?) to do a 45-minute, emergency laparascopic appendectomy on my 15-year-old son. Take a close look at that number. EIGHTY-FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS. Forty-two thousand for one surgeon, and forty-two thousand for another surgeon. This is independent of the hospital and emergency-room charges. This is just for each of the surgeons. No facility. The best part is that, within a month of getting our bill, Lutz Surgical Partners sent us to collections. If this is what you are looking for in a surgeon, good luck. This has been our nightmare. It has pretty much torn my family apart, ruined our finances, and caused great suffering.
UPDATE: Lutz Surgical Partners was eventually successful in negotiating with Blue Cross and settled for half of the original bill. I received a BCBS document stating that we have no personal liability for the negotiated amount and that Lutz Surgical Partners will not bill us for the balance. We'll see.

Dr. Kanama is calm, reassuring, confident and kind. I have had two emergency surgeries within a year, and was fortunate that he was the surgeon on call both times. I have not had any complications or problems thus far and am very thankful for the care I have received from him. Excellent surgeon!

Dr Kanama was attentive before surgery and answered all of my questions. I felt very confident in his surgical skills and the entire surgical team and anesthesiologists all spoke very highly of him. His P.A., Dr. Patel, was also very knowledgeable, helpful and direct.

Billing fraud. Brandon hospital said they accepted my insurance, but after an emergency lapchole, I got a separate non-covered bill from Dr Kanama for 24k, and his assistant who scrubbed in for a few minutes charged another 20k. This needs to be seen by lawyers because I am noticing in comments that I am not the only one.

Similar to others- I was seen in the ER and told "your insurance will cover it". After nearly 3 YEARS of dealing with the collection agency - yes, they sent me to collections after my insurance company refused to pay their outlandish billing request- without so much as a phone call or explanation -the bill was finally settled. Let's be clear- the price for the surgeon should have been ‎$5,812 to $11,052. Judging from the reviews of others it looks like it's common practice to charge 10-20 times (that's not an exaggeration) the normal price when the patient is in the ER.

If you are looking at this review then it most likely means that they pulled the same thing on you and all I can tell you is I feel for you. The stress and worry placed on me and my family has been an absolute nightmare.

If you are in the hospital waiting to be seen by them or waiting on your procedure- DO NOT let them put you under until you get a SIGNED agreement that they will accept the amount your insurance will reimburse. DO NOT fall for the slick "Trust me I'm a Dr.- your insurance HAS to pay" - because it's simply NOT true.

I too was taken by the Lutz Surgical Partners. I went to ER on May 27th 2019 assuming since I was in an In Network hospital all the doctors were in network too. Not so. The first bill I received was $7300 and they were going back and forth with my insurance. I did not even know that the insurance won't pay part of the bill and instead of them sending a bill they sent me to collections. But get this. My insurance paid $5000 and now the collection agency wants $4400 from me. The bill went up without them ever seeing me again. Something needs to be done about this kind of practice. I am not done. I will be fighting this. Hopefully someone sees this before they go to Advent Health in Wesley Chapel for ER service. Something fishy going on .

I have to agree with other reviews I believe a lawyer needs to look into this. i went into an in network Hospital (Oak Hill)they said i needed surgery to remove my Appendix. (I do have United Health care that I pay for) .the produre was 30 min according to paperwork and i just had to pay my deductible. Then about a month later i got a bill for $42,789.00 that i had to pay since they were out of network.Out of that the surgeon charged $22,000 and the assistant charged $22,000. How does the assistant make just as much as the surgeon ??? I argued that with UHC but they did not budge. about a month in a half i got a letter from a collection agency Rockford Mercantile which seems to work with Lutz Surgical Partners. they sent me a letter to appeal UHC after about 1 year arguging UHC paid the surgeon not the assistant stating it was Ineligable ? just today i received another letter from the collection agency stating i have to pay $22,000 to the assistant , UHC says they will not pay it. If i cannot get this resovled i will have to get a lawyer invloved. There are more stuff just to much to write.

They just charged me $3000 for a 15 min consultation and $21000 to remove my gall bladder, just for the surgeon Dr Ptdar. My insurance paid Baycare the facilities fees. Disgusting!! They did not even send me a bill. Just sent it to collections! Avoid these folks like the plague! Excessive billing seems to be a way of life for them. So from what I can tell their mark up is 10 x what it should be. They never gave me any warning up front on how much this would be. Just Nasty practices!
