Tucked away randomly in the oldest quarter of Jelenia Gora steps north of the rynek (also called Plac Ratuszowy), the Basilica of St Erasmus and St Pancras is a gargantuan mid-16th-century construction, built to replace an older Romanesque church that had fallen into disrepair as a consequence of erosion. The present church is a three-aisled Gothic structure that boasts several unusual exterior features worthy of checking out. Built amidst irregular housing tenements, some of which are older than the church itself, it is almost a secret place, its stone facade gloomy and overcast with shadows for most of the time. But move closer (to its southern entrance) and you will see an impressive multi-layered Gothic doorway engraved with wonderful Biblical scenes from the Old Testament. As one moves around the building amidst trees and overgrown shrubs, one comes across several worn-out marble epitaphs, preserved relics from the time of the first Romanesque structure. The rich interior, mostly Baroque provides a startling contrast to the rather austere exterior. The high altar, adorned with lavish Baroque stucco is a theatrical ensemble of paintings, gilded friezes and feisty decor. The huge altarpiece on the high altar is a threefold composition that depicts the saints Erasmus and Pancras with heads raised towards the Virgin in a plea for mercy. Go around the side aisles to admire the Way of the Cross, a unique set of 14 plates of solid silver hewn out with details of the Passion. The basilica is kept closed for most of the time during the day but opens for service every evening at around 6:00. Viewing is possible daily before and after Mass.

A magnificent Basilica that only recently got upgraded to a basilica from a church. The basilica is huge with amazing ornaments all around. There is a mass on most of the days. The benches have heating installed underneath them for your hands. With the given restrictions social distancing and masks must be used.

A place where you can feel like living in the distant past, so sacred and blessed. The building has been renovated inside and looks magnificent these days. Great atmosphere with the living Holy Spirit.
