An interesting place to visit. Lot of details of the military and early times as well . View is fantastic and ideal for taking a few pics.
Must visit

This was virtually the first place I spent some time at in Old Riga, forming effectively a notable entrance at one spot to the Old Town.
Built in 1650, it's worth going inside for the excellent history display, a good introduction to Riga's past, which of course was always centred close to the safe river port some 15k from the ocean.

Powder Tower in Riga is the only original piece of defensive system left from long time ago.

Started built in the end of XIII-th century it was ruined and re-build in the middle of XVII-th century it was active use during Swedish-Poland war. Later on the tower also been prison with a torture chambers. And even later students from Polytechnic University took care of abandoned tower

According to unofficial information, under the building of the Powder Tower there are underground military bunkers, equipped before the Second World War and still classified

Nowadays it’s a branch of Military Museum in Latvia with permanent exhibition

By the way - the entrance is free of charge, so if you are around you should visit the place as I did!
