The history of the exact date of foundation of the cemetery is unknown. In the first half of the 17th century, additional sections of sand dunes were added to the existing territory of burials for the arrangement of the Old Believer and Orthodox cemeteries. Here, in 1777, the chapel of All Saints was built, in 1815 it was rebuilt into a wooden All Saints Church of the Annunciation (Nikolsky) parish. According to the church, the Orthodox cemetery became known as All Saints. In those days, the homeless, the poor, the drowned and the violent deaths were buried outside the cemetery fence.
In 1851, the cemetery All Saints Church became a parish church. Due to the overcrowding of the old cemetery near the Church of All Saints at the Ivanovsky Gates, a new vast plot of land was allocated for a new cemetery, which was called Ioannovsky.
In 1866, a wooden chapel of John the Baptist was built at the cemetery.
In 1882, according to the project of the architect Janis Baumanis, a new brick All Saints Church was erected, and the old wooden one was transferred to the new Ivanovo cemetery[1]. The transfer of the church was carried out with donations from the owners and workers of the Kuznetsov Porcelain Factory who lived here. In 1889, according to the project of J. Baumanis, a clergy house and a retaining wall along the street were built, in 1892-1902, according to the projects of A. Edelson and H. Devendrus, a gatehouse and a fence with a gate were built.
Since 1913, according to the project of the architect Vladimir Lunsky, the construction of a new stone church was underway, the construction was interrupted by the First World War, the revolution, and was completed only in 1934 by the architect Vladimir Shervinsky.
Since 1921, Archpriest Nikolai Shalfeev has been the rector of the Ioannovsky parish.
After bloody battles on June 30 - July 1, 1941, in the Moscow suburb, they managed to get permission to bury the dead Red Army soldiers in two mass graves, about 150 people in the Orthodox part of the Ioannovsky cemetery, about 800 people in the new Old Believer cemetery near the railway. Granite obelisks with eight-pointed crosses were placed on the graves. About 1000 graves are also buried in the cemetery, those who died during the liberation of Riga in 1944, as well as those who died in Riga from wounds and diseases in 1944-1945.
