Very nice area. Great place for a picnic. Slightly disapointed that you can't walk inside the bridge. The construction is amazing. Would habe loved to get pics from inside. There is a walkway on the outside if the bridge. Other than that it's worth the visit. Next time we are bringing a picnic basket!

Some good history here.
In 1861, the city was the site of the Battle of Philippi, known as the "Philippi Races". Although a minor skirmish, this is considered the earliest notable land action of the American Civil War.

Many years ago I had relatives who lived in Philippi. I always loved going thru the covered bridge with my grandparents.

Current usable two lane covered bridge in Philippi was in great condition and a perfect little town to venture in.

Beautiful and friendly little town. Lots of neat history. Make sure to stop in and see the museum.

Beautiful and still functional covered bridge with a rich history. We needed a break from our interstate travel and found ourselves driving much further away than anticipated from the sign we saw on the highway. Granted, we didn't have signal for a good while and hadn't already looked up the directions so that was on us. Anyway, we were treated with such an amazing experience. Didn't realize the history of the bridge, plus the park areas around it were simply gorgeous. Great place to walk the pups for a good while, as well. You can walk across the water via a pathway on the outside of the bridge and drive over it, as well. Probably not with too tall of vehicles, however. Can't remember if there were warning signs for vehicle types or anything.

Thought I'd heard of this town, Philippi, the bridge is in before but knew it wasn't from the bridge as that was a surprise. Later realized this was the town I'd read about on a roadside website where they had some mummies a local had created many years ago. Passed through on a holiday so did not get to see the mummies, but there was apparently a museum across the bridge. Wish we'd had more time to see parts of the town, however. Were driving back from a funeral and this walk around the bridge area was something the person who left us would have been fascinated by so we felt it was a fitting tribute, as well.

Photos not popping up for some reason but hopefully I can add some later. Gorgeous and interesting spot, for sure. Recommend this detour, though might want to look in advance as, if we'd known about it sooner, we could have taken a route there earlier and more in the right direction of our overall trip. Still, was worth even a detour we didn't expect.

Always great to show landmarks to folks who have never seen them. Very nice historic place in a nice little historic town.
