The car I was given, a Ford Focus, had malfunctioning windshield wipers, and also had a governance system for speed at 65MPH (the speed limit on my daily commute of 55 minutes to Charleston is 70MPH.) But, I was stuck with the car until Tuesday.
On Tuesday, I called Shana at the Hertz location at the Yeager Airport in Charleston WV. She said she understood my frustration with the car, and if I was unhappy with it, I could bring it by and she would swap me into a Chevy Cruz. I told her that sounded great, and that I would be by at 6:30pm to get the car after work.
After work, I drove to the airport, to be greeted by a young gentleman (I did not get his name). He initially said that he would not be able to exchange my car because it was an insurance rental. After insisting that Shana had told me to come in, he enlisted the help of an older lady and was apparently able to do the switch. Then I was told that they had no Chevy Cruz for me, only a Mazda 2 or a ford fiesta. Since Shana had said that the Fiesta has the same governing system as the Focus did, I opted for the Mazda 2, and while I was disappointed that I had once again been lied to, I had resolved to drive that car anyway.
Everything changed once I got into the Mazda2. It was dirty, with sticky residue all over the steering wheel, dust and dirt everywhere, and someone had very obviously been smoking cigarettes. I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke and it triggered a migraine for me immediately (which I still have today). I had to sit parked for half an hour for the vision effects to subside from the migraine before driving the car back to Hertz.
At this point, it was close to 8pm, and I still had an hour drive back to my house in Huntington. To say I was frustrated is an understatement. I politely asked the young man at the counter to give me a different vehicle and told him that there was cigarette smoke and the car was dirty, but he insisted that there was no other car he could give me (There were tons of cars out in the hertz lot, I could see them.) I did get very emotional after this, due to having a migraine and being very frustrated but in the car outside and not at the counter. I called my insurance to change the rental reservation to enterprise, which they couldn't do until the next day (today), so i was forced to drive the car to Huntington.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, the Mazda2 didn't have CRUISE CONTROL. I had literally just told the gentleman at the counter I commute from 55 minutes away and he puts me in a car with no cruise control! So I couldn't even try to calm down or relax on the way home because I had to constantly have my foot on the gas pedal to keep it up to speed.
Today, my husband went to turn the vehicle back in, and once again got extremely poor customer service at the 3rd avenue location. After already paying for a full tank of gas initially when he rented the ford focus, they tried to charge him for the gas in the Mazda as well. They said that he hadn't paid for gas, when it says clearly on our bank statement we had a charge for $27.
I am just in awe of how one company could manage to make my life such a nightmare for DAYS. I didn't even pay for this rental, so there is no motivation for me to write this (refund, ect.) except to let someone know how truly awful it is to be a customer of your company. I would like a personal apology from an executive of your company, and a refund of the gas we bought, but even if that happens I will still be warning everyone I know to stay away.
