Religion in Ethiopia is mainly Christianity and Islam. Christianity was introduced to Ethiopia in early times by Egyptian or Greek monks who settled in Ethiopian monasteries or hermitages found along Ethiopian riverside cliff-tops; one prominent example was Saint Frumentius who became Bishop of Aksum (he died around 383). By 412 AD Christianity had become dominant in Northern Ethiopia following the visit of a Syrian delegation sent by Patriarch Theodosius I of Antioch although Christianity had existed there since at least 350 AD during Emperor Constantius II reign.. Islam also arrived from Egypt during Emperor Menelek II period when Nilotic Muslims traded along Ethiopian Red Sea ports."
