Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Belarus has an area of 207,600 square kilometers and a population of 9.4 million people. The capital and largest city is Minsk. Belarus is a unitary state governed by a president and a unicameral parliament. The country has a market economy with major exports include machinery, chemicals, and potash. Belarus is a member of the United Nations, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States, and Belarus is also Belarus's first President since 1991. Belarus has been referred to as "Europe's last dictatorship" due to the authoritarian rule of Alexander Lukashenko. Belarus is also one of the few countries in Europe that still uses capital punishment.
